The Broad Museum in LA

December 3, 2017

Caitlyn and I were invited by her sister to check out The Broad in LA today. Since our friends Charles and Marianne live nearby, we decided to grab breakfast with them beforehand. Turned out that Miguel and Jen were free too. We ate at a place called Forage right on Sunset Blvd. Pretty tasty.

Afterwards, we met Caralyn and Karen at the museum for the free exhibit. If you haven’t checked it out, it’s full of modern art that’s good for about an hour of wandering. My highlights were the Roy Lichtenstein pieces, the Warhol stuff and giant table that I forgot to photograph. Hands down, my favorite room was the Basquiat/Keith Haring room. I know that I’m shooting a lot of B&W photos but the vibrance of their work was mesmerizing. I even bought a Jean-Michel Basquiat coffee table book on my way out. I saw a video once on his artistic process. He would often work on 5-6 pieces at one time while listening to Jazz on full blast. The most interesting aspect to me is that he would hold the brush like a child using only a fist without fingers. His art definitely reflects his childlike genius and stream of consciousness process.

Wandering around LA seems fun. I think that I’m going to spend a few days during winter break walking around in LA just to soak it all in. If anybody’s interested in doing a photowalk in December, hit me on the gram at @mezatron.

Caralyn kept filming me as I waited for the right people to walk by this streetscape. I love the look on this woman’s face. “Are you taking a photo of me?”

Home for The Holidays

November 30, 2019

This getting older stuff is actually pretty cool. A few years back, I never would have imagined my early 30’s being so great. Back in my day, we got Thursday and Friday off from school but in my district, they give us the whole week off for Thanksgiving. I guess so many families travel for […]

Almaguer Fiesta

April 23, 2018

Last weekend, Cory threw a bday party for Angela at his smash pad on Dawson. It had all the makings of a good time. The booze was flowing, the mariachis were loud and the tacos were fire. Instead of getting a car when she turned 16, her Dad made her wait until 31. He cruised […]

Enjoying My Last Days Of Summer at J2L

August 19, 2019

Not a lot of writing for this one, just some photos from nogi and open mat this past week at Jiu Jitsu League. I’m gonna miss training this often but it’s back to school where I’m probably going to be teaching 8 periods this year…
