André Galvão Visits J2L

May 12, 2018

In life, you’re always learning from someone who’s come before you. In that same respect, you often find yourself teaching someone else where you’ve been. I like to think about it like this. You have two hands, one for pulling yourself upward and another to help your fellow man climb with you. As a professor over me, Kevin is on another level. His knowledge of the intricacies of the game are down to the minutiae. Turn your wrist like this, put your weight here, drop your hip next to your opponent. For Kevin, he has André.

This past week, André visited the academy to promote Kevin to 2nd degree black belt. Not only is this an amazing accomplishment, but it provided for André to teach a sweep to the class. I didn’t count but I estimate that over 60 people were on the mats at one time. The night ended with some of our guys and gals rolling with André to see how they stack up against a world champion BJJ player.

Professor Galvão showed up to a full house of colorful killers.
ATOS to the max. Prof. Galvão setting up a sweep.
Adam is helluva hard roll. His chokes are extremely effective. It was cool to watch him put up a fight with Andre early in the night.
For five years, I’ve sat and watched Kevin teach positions and moves. In a rare moment, Prof. Kevin sat amongst his school to watch Prof. Galvão teach. As a teacher whose students have told that “I’m supposed to know everything”, this really hits home for me about growth mindset and continuous learning. Look how seriously everyone is watching Kevin speak, the respect in the air was palpable.
Easily my favorite photo from the night. As Prof. Kevin put it, Prof. Andre was telling him earlier that night about an escape from deep De La Riva where he hits a huge pirouette to free his leg. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time when he pulled it out against Nori.

Thus Far

January 2, 2020

More and more, I find myself feeling a little older and a little wiser. With the holidays behind us and new year ahead, I’ve had a chance to look back at the year and came up with a few thoughts on life.

Jack used to cut my hair but once I started getting my part cut in, I realized that edging up with a straight razor wasn’t his strongest suit. Then I switched over to Ivan for a bit but after he left, I started to book with Raymond. I like chatting with him about his life […]

Toddler Summer

July 24, 2022

Well, it’s official. We have a two year old. And what a summer it has been. Lots of climbing, yelling, crying and laughter. His opinions are strong and his mind is maturing at a rapid pace. It’s really insane too see how fast language develops once they start to find their voice. I love this […]
