Finding a good barbershop isn’t hard these days. There’s tons of guys out there who can cut up a nice fade. Go on Yelp and you’ll find a dozen trendy barbershops in your area that overcharge for a simple haircut.
A good barber is a cornerstone of proper manhood
You can check my other post about the previous barbershop I would frequent in Long Beach. There’s something about certain shops that have that nostalgic feel. It’s more than the things hanging on the walls, it’s a feeling. And it sure doesn’t feel like a $50 hit in your wallet.
I’ve gotten cut at Anaheim District three times now and each time I leave the place, I have this swelling of pride and community walking out the door. The guys who run the place are super welcoming and I find myself grinning ear to ear laughing at the banter and bullshit that goes on in there.
It’s a gathering place for honest working people who need a good haircut and wouldn’t mind some good conversation either. It’s like those guys are my cousins I hardly ever got to know growing up but now see as adults.
I told them I was a Photo teacher at Orange and wouldn’t you know it? One of the guys is an alumnus from back in the late 70’s. Honestly, I love it here. It feels so earnest, almost like stepping back in time.
I never worry about wait times or how long the haircut will last. Every minute sitting in that chair is time well spent learning about the lives of my fellow man. Damn, I can’t say enough good things about this place.
From the decor, the clientele and the atmosphere of the room, you’d never guess that this place is only a few years old. I sure hope it sticks around for many more.
