Snow in Late May

May 31, 2019

This post really ought to be called photos of Carter, Caitlyn, the snow and strangers. (In that order)

Long story short, we headed up to Mammoth Lakes for Caitlyn’s birthday over Memorial weekend. Instead of warm and sunny skies, we were greeted with 50 degree days and a mild snow storm on Sunday.

The forecast for the season calls for boarding into August, which is pretty insane. I bet the mountain biking community is pretty bummed about it.

Enjoy the view, I sure did.

I’m thinking about going snowboarding on summer break. How crazy is that?

On the way up, we stopped to break in Adelanto at a gas station. A truck with a horse trailer pulled in and there was this dog hanging out in the back.
Carter on the way up, look how happy he was not knowing that we were driving into 30 degree weather.
The view overlooking Twin Lakes from across the bridge
The general store at Twin Lakes Campground. I bet this family that owns it can’t wait for the snow to clear up. Without the store, I’m not sure how else they make a living.
Caitlyn threw a bunch of snow at me right after this photo was taken. In hindsight, I should have seen it coming.
The second morning, we spent most of our time soaking in the WiFi and warmth of our soon to be checked out of AirBNB. I wandered around the street and saw this man and child cruising around in the parking lot. The man greeted me and told me that the boy needed some fresh air. This is one of those happy accident instinctual photographs where I shot from the hip and prayed it came out well.
Carter and Caitlyn playing at the baseball diamond at Shady Rest Park. Carter was getting cabin fever in the car and he needed some outside time.
Epic pup Carter
Right after the baseball diamond, he suddenly realized just how cold it was. We swaddled him in a blanket and cranked up the floor heater in the car.
The road to start the June Lake loop from the north. We hit the little side road to go check out the Parker Lake trailhead. That‘ll be for next time.
We checked out the Volcom Brothers skatepark off Meridian Road. It’s a sprawling park with some really awesome features. There was a family there checking it out when we arrived. A few minutes later these two guys showed up in winter coats and started pushing around. This is probably my favorite photo from the trip.
On one of the snowy days, we detoured into Sherwin Creek Road to check out the snow in a less populated area. We were not disappointed.
More spooky images from Sherwin Creek Road.

Once we got out town, we headed up to Mono Lake to check to out. Something about naturally occurring chemicals in the lake create these structures in the water. It’s pretty cool but worth about an hour tops.

There’s a boardwalk for the last leg of the trail. It’s a really easy walk overall.
Posted up at Mono Lake with Mom.
There was a family hanging out at the end of the boardwalk. This kid was removing his shoes and when he finished, he looked back at me while I focused the frame.
Admittedly, this dodging job is bit crappy but I still like how the photo turned out.
This bone was laying out in the tall grass. It looked about the size of a teenager’s hips and spine. We think it was a coyote. Still cool.
This is Mono Lake. Click on it to see it full size. I was playing around with some of the pano features in Lightroom to get this one. It’s six RAW images smashed together .
The view upwards from our car on the last night when we slept in the back of my RAV4.
I love the sense of space in this image. Is the tree really far away? Or is it just really small?
The Vons parking lot was blanketed with a little snow cover. I love the negative space in this photo
The intersection of Minaret and Main where it becomes Lake Mary Road. Someone was out there braving the wet weather.
As we headed home, we kept driving through pockets of shade from the partial cloud cover. I try to keep my camera handy in times like this. I’m glad it fits so nicely in the center console. I love the streak of sunlight in the road so much I can forgive myself so shooting through the windshield.
Skatepark at Bishop. The father of these boys was cruising around on some off-road hover board vehicle. I was hoping he was gonna fall as he dropped into the quarter pipe but he had pretty good balance as he went full send.
On our way home, we stopped in Bishop to stretch our legs and let Carter run around. This guy was passing by and I instinctively snapped the shutter. In times like this, I almost always aim too low and miss my frame. Not this time!
On the last leg of the ride home, we stopped in Mojave to use the restroom at Denny ‘s. While Caitlyn was inside, I was soaking in what a desolate shithole of a town it is. The wind was blowing it was hard to see ahead as I clung onto my hat before it took flight. I was drawn to this Army Navy store in the distance when I heard the roar of an engine. . As he passed by, a few nearby pigeons also took flight, you can see them right above the building.

Old Man Looking Out Window of Bus

Roman Holiday | Part 2

November 24, 2017

As we walked the streets of Rome, I took it upon myself to be a little more forward with my street shooting. A lot of stuff was shot from the hip, especially on the bus where I couldn’t get away from my subject quickly. However, I had been working on a few techniques of distraction […]

I Was Wrong About Hawai’i

March 1, 2020

The last time I went to Hawai’i, I was maybe 17 or 18 years old. My brother and I went to visit our cousin Andrew who was studying at University of Hawai’i. I don’t really remember much about that trip except a visit to Costco for some alcohol that did not go our way. Andrew […]

Feels Like Heaven

June 14, 2021

Many people will tell you that your college years are among the best. I agree. Not because I miss waking up hungover and eating leftover burritos everyday, or having some shitty car that you hope starts every time you get in but because of the friends you make during those formative years. My friends and […]
